CaptainFokai:

For those who might be curious, even for those who aren’t–we just wanted to share with you the reason we chose Captain Fokai as our mascott…

Captain Fokai has never been any single person–it’s actually the imperfect symbol and personification of the fokai spirit that exists in everyone. that is why teh Captain lives behind a mask.and yes–in many ways..he is aspiring to be a super hero.

TheCaptain Fokai360Collection is an ongoing  project that has been going on for the past 4years–since the birth of the CaptainFokai mascott–it’s a master compilation gathered from different representatives around the world to bring everyone into our experiences in travel and at home, in victory and defeat, in living and learning.

It is a standing invitation to encourage folks to explore and pursue opportunities outside of the box–as well as to help us get a better perspective of whats personally current..hopefully to help pave the way for our better future captured by the undying pursuit of self-improvement and life celebration.

IMG01849-20100713-1838First..giving proper shoutouts to BJPenn and the rest of the PennFamily. We are in imminent and humble gratitude for all their support. We were very priveleged to work with them 2004-2007 for some collaborative projects facilitated by world MMAIndustry trailblazer and former FokaiHawaii foreman RICHARD CHOU.It was and still is an honor to have shared in their good graces.

For years, even prior to BJs UFCSuper-stardom–BJ had already done tremendous work in the cage and ring and had since immortalized his name among in MixedMartialArts competition.

For Pacific Islanders–his accomplishments provided a beacon of light to point island fighter athletes and industry-heads towards the furthest horizons. It is currently his website, www.bjpenn.com, that in one way or another reminds us to pick up trash and( despite potholes, speedbumps, and eventual detours) to enjoy the view along the way.

It was years later that the globalization of the UFC pointed its spotlight towards the electrifying experience that the world now recognizes as BJPenn, through their remarkable efforts–the fighting islander and proud Hawaiian spearheaded the islands sincere pursuit for a noble and respectable name in the modern worlds most proving battleground….theUFC

We have respectfully watched him rise to the top with his defeat over Rodrigo Gracie in Rumble on the Rock’s Gracie vs. Penn, we saw him dominate Renzo Gracie in GVP2@TheAlohaStadium.

He later went to rock a much bigger LyotoMachida, beat up the legendary Georges St.Pierre, win two UFC WorldTitles, have world celebrities cheer his name, become a father and most importantly—inspire a planet.

Last October we just watched him in a decision loss to Nick Diaz and calling it quits for MMA.

The hearts dropped for Pacific Islanders all over the world when hearing this at first. but in true faith of BJ’s greatness and his destiny for greatness–many are reassured of his return to MMA competition in the future; and even moreare comforted in his MMA Immortality..period

if  the return to MMA is not in his destiny–were excited to see what other acts of greatness and community service that might be in store for the future for the fearless Hawaiian.

Thanks BJ for all the support. We will never for get your family’s service to this humble effort.

Heres a really cool and key article about our people and the Soul of Guam…

I (recently) attended an AFLAC insurance function at the Westin Resort. A Chamorro dance company performed for us. The spokesman for the dance company made closing remarks on his aspirations to continue performing for the preservation and promotion of our Chamorro culture.

A couple of days later, I went shopping at Kmart. I entered the store at the door marked “entrance.” Directly ahead of me was a group of about eight teenagers leaving the store. They showed no sign of yielding a small pathway for me to complete my entry because most of them had their heads buried in their video games or were texting while walking. I yielded to them and made my way toward the outside edge of the group to let them pass. I bumped the arm of a girl who was engrossed with her electronic device. I looked back to confirm I did not knock her down and she was upright and fine.

I also noticed that she gave me hard looks (atan baba) for the bumping incident, which I did not appreciate.

I’m in my 60s and I felt disrespected by this young girl. I also feel she disrespected the cultural preservation efforts of those who performed (at that function), as well as the efforts of others who are also engaging in Chamorro cultural preservation in other formats and mediums.

I pondered this experience further and concluded that the dance performance I previously witnessed may not be conveying the true spirit of our original culture.

Chamorro cultural preservation efforts must take on more than how we dressed, danced and spoke in the past. Our preservation efforts today must be to instill good character traits and values into our children, as our ancient forefathers did.

Our ancient fathers embraced the traits of respect among many other good values. They understood it to be vital to the survival of the culture. They understood it prevented self-destruction by anarchy from within. They knew it would keep us strong and blessed, even in our conquest by outside forces and influences. They knew that respect for others would produce the “good fruit” to perpetuate the true spirit of the Chamorro culture. They lived it and passed it on to generations forward.

We too must live it today.

My experience at Kmart tells me that we may have been producing bad fruit in the last few generations. The experience also told me that our culture cannot be respected by others because they fail to be impacted by its true spirit. Disrespect within us Chamorros will breed a personal disrespect from within for our own culture. Our language and all our dancing, chanting, history would be deemed valueless and not much more than interesting entertainment.

If all cultures bring forth “good fruit,” world peace might evolve.

Let’s get back to the true spirit of our ancient roots. Start right now with your generation. I’m not against tribal tattoos and our necklaces or pony tails, dancing and chanting. Focusing only on these things alone will cause us to fall short of our preservation goal.

Enroute to another fokai.tv and fokaistuff.com revamp.

We were going over old notes and came along this page in history…

Heres a makeshift blueprint we sent to Ed Cruz of the website development company Lead Design for the fokai website we were shooting for back in 2004. Thought the site has obviously been engineered differently–the soul is still in place…

TheFokai: FistofFury award is a salute given to individials/organizations commited and in action towards the goodwill and honorable service of martial arts and its positivie contributions to the people–

it was awarded to TrenchTec Saipan and its positive steering of the worldwide growing sport of MixedMartialArts competition.

TrenchTech/PurebredSaipan was unfortunately set afire by an arsonist two weeks ago. The cage was burned, the mat was burned, and all teh equpimpent was left destroyed. But something the fire couldnt destroy was the will of its members.

Fighting fire with Fire…TrenchTech Saipan will rise again.  The fire of Saipan martial arts is truly UNstoppable.Best of Luck and Here to support for the Ressurection…
