2008 was another exciting year for Marianas MMA, with headline stories that marked another eventful year for  Guam Combat Sports.

 InReview:

The tremendous growth in local and professional combat sports has stimulated a makeover in the Guam Boxing and Wrestling .Patrick Ayuyu gets his big break to represent the United States in K-1Max:World155lb tournament.

Mike Sanchez leads Guam youth grappling with a bronze medal finish at this years World BJJ Championships in California, as well gold medal finishes in the in the Philippines and Japan. Team Purebred/LloydIrvinJiujitsu gains massive momentum for Guam BJJ with its stellar performance and an overall podium finish in the Asian Open JiujitsuChampionships.

A Collective account of separate efforts of the past have cast a light onto Guam that is turning industry heads in the region towards our island. Aside from pre-existings connections to world MMA organizations, other  ventures abroad from Guam-based fighters and MMA advocates in 2008 have widened the door for pending opportunities into major world fighting organizations like WEC and Professional Shooto. And now we have evolved into a point where  not only is our island being solicited from regionally as

a resource for competitors, but also for a resource of quality training, good vibrations,  and industry intelligence—packaged in a tropical paradise.

img_0195.JPG

However, This industry is far-from-perfect nor does it pretend to be perfect. Its hopeful that in studying to improve ourselves athletically and prfessionally, we realize that the support of these island has given this sport visibility. And with visibility comes influence and with influence there should come responsibility. So As committed as we are towards making a name for ourselves internationally, hopefully (entering 2009) we give equal focus towards cultivating, not just perpetrating, a good name for our industry locally.

. So As we say goodbye to another progressive year for Guam Combatives, hopefully, in honoring opportunity with preparation, the achievements of 2008(as remarkable as they are) will proudly serve as the stepping stones for even greater things in 2009.

Hafa Adai,

Congratulations to Luis Blanco for his promotion to becoming a Brailian Jiujitsu Brown Belt. A salute to the flourishing identity of combat sports in the Military with the  1st Annual National Guard Birthday Combatives Tournament on December13th Spike22Athletics will be hosting Guams first Submission grappling team challenge at their new facility in Tumon 12pm this Saturday. And the Marianas Open Jiujitsu and Submission Grappling tournament has set their date for the next event on February 21st  of 2009. Spike22 is looking at sending some fighters to Dublin in February for Irelands premier kickboxing event, Kollision4.  Guam’s UltimateFighter hopeful, Joe Duarte is on island and hosted a fundraiser in support of Erica’s House just last night and a host f locals training abroad are on their way back with new techniques t share and cntribute for the holidays.  TrenchWar9:The Annihilation was a success . The promoters of TrenchWarz9 succeeded in filling the house with Saipan vs. Guam fight card and with CNMI’s debut Female MMA bout. The last few years has much t say about CNMI Combatives. Whereas Guam in the past stood far ahead in competition among the islands, we are finding a closer balance in MarianasMMA largely through the efforts of the movers and shakers in Saipan Combat Sports. Under 5years into the game,

Saipan has since climbed the ranks offering the Marianas a very competitive stock of MMAs heavyweight and superheavyweight categories . With new talent rising from every other weight division, Saipan has become its own epicenter via s relatively frequent combative event atmosphere.

As much as this is an applause  for the competitiors ,organizers, and influences in Saipan MMA in giving our athletes the benefits of Martial Arts Competition;, this is also an ongoing study of how we can better position the people of our islands  for opportunities stemming from humilty, confidence, and fortitude nurtured  into the Martial Arts Mind.

Is Saipan tougher than Guam or is Guam tougher than Saipan? Who is the best heavyweight? Who is the best pound for pound fighter? Is Kickboxing better than Jiujitsu. In some respectsthese can be considered important questions.

However, We need to give equal if not more attention to the fact that in the scheme of things; in chasing excellence in competitive results, we are in the pursuit of knowledge and We are on the road to self-improvement.

”What can martial arts do for our islands?” This is a good question to ponder.

True, a decade’s streak  of locally successful MMA ventures has proven that Marital Arts can entertain. But thousands of years of wisemen, poetry, precision technique, and community service continues to prove that Martial Arts can also educate.

In a world of infinite possibilities, There is always a chance that successful MMA wont be around forever. While exciting ourselves t the fact that our islands are growing as a powerhouse in international MMA as athletics. we should never forget the gifts of virtue–like responsibility, respect, and moral code MMA cultivates in us as martial art.

The pool of talent is fast growing in the islands and for those uf us who might want to take things far in Mixed Martial Arts Competition, the reality is that thre are good chances that events aren’t as frequent as daylight and thatthere and there are increasing numbers of quality fighter- athletes also in hard training waiting for their chance at 15minutes of fame.

Hooray for Rising talent, hungry fighters, a flourishing combat sports industry, and international exposure.. So for those in training, hopefully we can discover that all the years we may have spent practicing techniques in combat, we have, in the process, discovered better strategies in life; so when our bodies grow old and weak we can celebrate and live fruitfully in the strength of spirit and hopefully be proud that we have done our part in providing (for our people) a better environment for our fighters as fluorishing athletes and , ever-presently, as community citizens.

Thanks for dropping by.

fokaimaskshirt.jpgWe sweat. We Bleed. Sometimes we even cry. The pursuit of performance is taking athletes and enthusiasts around the world to new levels of sacrifice.

In this day and age, with new discoveries in modern science with nutrition, sports, and health and fitness, serious athletes are educating themselves and working smarter and harder at every edge for an upper hand over the opposition.

Some people do it for the thrill of competition, the glory of victory; Some do it for physical fitness. But what about the people involved in sport that dont ever seem to win, people who never compete, or people who cant seem to achieve personal goals because of bad scheduling, bad genetics, or a lack of access to available resources. These are the people that never had their hand raised in victory, never stood on a pedestal, never received a medal, or even a pat on the back for a job well done. What keeps us going?

The competition is only getting better as we are getting older. The guys who were schooling us yesterday are getting schooled today and that winning pedestal we’ve been dying to stand on seems to be getting further and further. Do we shrink from the challenge or rise to the occasion

The hard-fought path to victory or even unvictory brings value and merit far beyond medals or trophies .  Diligent training, perseverance, and  the conscious will to improve take us to new and previously unimaginable levels in not only body but more importantly in mind and in effect, spirit. Realizing this teaches us that the victory over ourselves can be as important as, if not more so, than victory over others.

So for those of us who aren’t the best at what we do, Lets bring to the spotlight,

the discipline to be discovered in sacrifice, the commitment to find in goal-setting, and the humility to be blessed with in defeat.

Some of us may never be the best , but hard training, diligence, and sacrifice brings harvest for both winners and losers. It is important that we see, appreciate, and celebrate the spirit, in victory or defeat, we cultivate through self-perseverance.

Everything seems to be so competitive today.  Remarkable super athletes seem to be growing on trees. They are genetically gifted, naturally talented, well-trained, focused, and financially funded. They have managers, fitness and nutrition consultants, they diet, take supplements and get proper rest and recovery. And for some, this is just high school.

Realize that the number of Champions far outnumbers the number of participants. The odds truly stand against us. True, there is great value to become part of this elite, and there are also great lessons found in victory over others but ultimately it’s the path to and  the commitment and sacrifice to get to that destination, that eventually can reveal to be, in itself, the greatest destination.

The majority of us might never become champions. The majority of us might never get famous for all the hours and days and years of sacrifice and commitment. Some of us might never even win a match, a game, a contest, etc…But don’t let this deny you fruits of hard labor.

The opposition is working really hard today to deny you of the win. But remember Ultimately, only you can deny yourself self-victory. Work hard. Train like a Madman. Reap the fruits that you sew.

Exhaust the Body. Proceed the Mind. Cultivate the Spirit.

Hafa Adai,

annihilation.jpg

Things have slowed down temporarily for loally related MMA so we should all keep our attention focused for Saipan’s TrenchWarz9:TheAnnihiliation for December 12th at the World Resort .
UFC veteran Renato Verissimo held a very successful 2week instructional reminding key players in our MMA community the values of Jiujitsu in skill as well as art. Big congratulations to the members of the Spike22 and Purebred/LLoydIrvin Jiujitsu Academies. The word on the street is that there was heaps of Jiujitsu belt promotions. These things don’t come easy. May the Mariana Islands join you in taking things to the next level.

whitesilver.jpg

teambronze.jpg
Guam was well represented in the region in our island’s landmark performance in Asia’s largest BJJ event. Congratulations to Team Purebred/LLoydIrvin Jiujitsu for bringing home from The (AOJC) Asian Open Jiu Jitsu Campionships in Japan–11 gold, 4silver, and 2bronze medals, as well as a 2nd place team trophy in the overall Asian Novice and a 3rd place team trophy in the Asian Team Divisions

joetaimangalo.jpg

In a sport once entirely dominated by Brazilian JIujitsu, Recent changes in MMA Rules and Regualtions seemed to have given more importance to strength, stamina, and athleticism and less importance to certain aspects of Jiujitsu, which is deservedly knwn as the gentle art.

img_0379.JPG

Always in the preference of giving respect to roots, it is key not only to digest BJJ in the shadow of mixed martial arts competition, we should respect the contributions Jiujitsu and The famous Gracie Family have brought to the internationally successful sport of modern MMA. but also for respect for what BJJ has accomplished as its own identity in the competitive world of combat sports and in the bigger scheme of positive networking.

yamatodamashiiartwork.jpg

In light ofthese things positive that have come from the gentle art, lets celebrate Jiujitsu on Guam for at least two things: For what it has done for us as Martial Art: because sincere training in the arts has offered us more than Martial skill, but also fruits in wisdom and spirit. And for what Jiujitsu has done for us as sport: Besides providing Guam with great recognition and a very successful track record in international competition; a massive ambition for our Jiujitsu players has cultivated a direction and ambition far beyond just competition credit; it has nurtured values, among our people– a sense of commitment, camraderie, and local pride..

code.jpg

For some words of wisdom taken from the Purebred myspace profilie,

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=111298212&MyToken=46fbaaf5-5f24-43b6-b9b5-bc397b0a0e16

“The greater the loyalty of a group toward the group, the greater is the motivation among the members to achieve the goals of the group, and the greater the probability that the group will achieve its goals”

For those of us who might nt be the biggest Jiujitsu fans, let us remember that it was Brazilian Jiujitsu and the legendary Gracie Family that paved the road for modern MMA today. Though Jiujitsu may not dominate the MMA world today as it has done before,BJJS gravity as martial art continues to educate and positively service the world as its own identity.

teampurebredlloydirvin.gif
So Let’s applaud and continue the undying efforts of a few for, through Jiujitsu, they have paved way for opportunity for the many in servicing Guam by not only improving our identity in world athletics but for more importantly for providing our island with another great opportunity and study in body, mind, and spirit.

Thanks for dropping by.
