Hafa Adai, So I guess most of us have seen Pat Ayuyu’s fight on youtube. . So he lost by KO but his performance was definitely not a disappointment. A fractured rib that he suffered since the end of the first round might keep him out of competition until the latter part of the year but rest assured, we will hear more of him in the near future.
Justin”TheShocker”Cruz is getting ready for a title fight in the URCCat the end of the month in the Philippines and KelvinFitial will be flying the Marianas Flag for the second time at the ArtOfWar in China. An applause for Saipan’s Frank “The Crank”Camacho for securing gold in the 185lb.white belt division anda bronze in the men’s no-gi intermediate at the the NAGA Virgina Grappling Championships. And another congratulations to Zac Rapadas for taking gold in the men’s blue belt division athe CopaPacifica Jiujitsu Championships inCalifornia. This comes just weeks after Jason Evangelista’s Gold in the Pan Ams and almost a year after an outstanding BJJ WorldTitle forGuam with James Quan’sGold Medal as a PurpleBelt at the WorldChampionships last year in
A dynamic six week road in grappling and Jiujitsu are in front of us as TheCarlsonGracieJiujitsuAcademy will be heading out to the Philippines hoping for another outstanding performance at the PanAsian BJJ andGrappling Tournament on May3rd.
Multiple Kickboxing, Jiujitsu, and Pankration medalist at only 14, Ian Lujan and a host of other Guamanians training at Mark Laymond’s Cobra Kai will be competing on the same weekend’s Grappler’s Quest in Las Vegas. On May10thThe CNMIwill be holding their second grappling tournament in the Mariana Islands’ largest Martial Arts training center in the 15000 square-foot training and event facility in the newTrenchTech/PurebredSaipan. The guys at Kontenda’s will be busy with Caesar Whitt hosting a Judo and Jiujitsu tournament, while Sonny Chargualaf hosts an amateur kickboxing event as Simon Ysrael facilitates, on the same day, a tournament for TaeKwonDo, all at the Westin Resort on May 17th With the BJJ World Championships around the corner , it seems that our Guam Grapplers here and abroad will have some opportunities to sharpen their blades before the event with these smaller, although always significant tournaments.
This time around though at the Worlds, Guam will be making a bigger presence with more than double the amount of Guam representative competitors from lst year stepping up to the challenge in the world arena, at the Mike and Arlene Walter Pyramid in LongBeachCalifornia.
Mike Fowler will be leading TeamPurebred/LloydIrvinJiujitsuAcademy with GuamBJJAmbassador and assistant instructor Stephen Roberto taking his first step into the highest level of BJJ Competition in the blackbelt division. Guam’s first BJJ World Champion James Quan , will hopefully join TheShoyorollOnlineForum’s Vince Quitugua and Chris Gutierrez for their first time in the World’s brown belt divisions.
Familiar MMA names among the long and growing list of Guam Grapplers heading to the Worlds will also be Ted Vida, T-RexAflague, ZachRapadas, possibly Frank”TheCrank”Camacho, as well as the recent PanAmerican gold medalist Jason Evangelista and PXC Vice President Eli Monge. As it looks,The Worlds Championships will not only be an opportunity for our competitors in competition, but also for our Guamanians and Chamorros in congregation. Strength inNumbers.

K-1:WorldMax
Over10 Years ago, Patrick Ayuyu was fighting as a semi-professional kickboxer in Japan and formerly announced as “TheToganiTyson” . Togani for the gym that he trained in, and Tyson for his physical likeness to the controversial, and many would agree, legendary, former professional boxer.
After more than a decade after a 3year career of 18 accumulated fights in amateur and professional kickboxing and only two losses by decision , after a unanimous decision loss ina world title fight in frnt of 23,00fans at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Ayuyu returned to the Marianas where he went undefeated in two kick boxing matches in Jungle Rules 1 and 2 ,and another two in Fury and Fighting Islands Rota, and a mixed amrtial arts bout in Fury6. Ayuyu then left to train with Enson Inoue in
Ayuyu fought his biggest career fight to date in his first bout against Dago Drago athe K-1WorldMax 16ManTournament. FirstRound: Pat comes out aggressively and pushes Drago back for most of the round staying inside. Lands more punches than Drago and looks like he’s leading like hes controlling the fr the first two minutes. The round heats up with Ayuyu and Drago exchanging more strikes in the pocket where Drago eventually lands a lerge left hok sending Pat reeling towards the corner but in god recovery under Dragos blows until the bell rings ending the round.
Round 2 heats up with Drago coming out more aggressively and Ayuyu just as happy to stay and exchange in the pocket with Drago unleashing his arsenal with foot thrusts and head kicks, eventually dropping Pat to the mat with ahead kick. Drago also lands a solid spinning back kick t the head. But Pat answers back with flurry f punches that Drago blcked with the rund ending in Drag’s favor. Round3.Excitement. Pats looking a bit mre winded but doesn’t stopt he attacking with Drago landing an axe kick t the head of Pat and then a body kick sending Pat to the canvas. Pat Rises fr anther vilent exchange with Drago landing anther headkick and then back ta notherleft bodykick sending Pat to the canvas before Pat returns with a big right hol where Drago evades, returning with a left hook that sends Ayuyu to the mat for the third and final time. Patrick Ayuyu suffers his first Knockout loss with only 4secnds left in the final round. A full house at the Green Arena in Hirshima cheered as Drago advanced and KO highlight reels played on the big screens while Pat walked got up and walked off on his own as camers and media waiting for interviews and photos of Gori-chan while fans got their pens, papers, and cameras ready for autographs of and photos with the new K-1 fighter that, despite his loss, had the entire arena cheering for another exciting fight at the World’s Most Prestigious Kickboxing event. Pat, talk to us about the fight:
“First, I would never have been here if nt for the fguidance and friendship of Enson Inoue, Sangtiennoi, and all the boys back home in the islands.’Thank You for everything. I will make you proud.I thought it was going to be a brawl but for the most part it was much more strategic than I anticipated. I am not going to make any excuses, I gave my best and Drago beat me. He was tough. He was fast. He was strong. But instead of defending, I just kept fighting forward. It was a good time of spirit. Despite all my hard training, he saw holes in my game and was able to capitalize on them. Fortunately so have I and Im going to train even harder and come back even better. The progress never stops for me. Neither does it for them. I know that.
“Its an honor for me to compete at this level, these are the world’s best fighters, K-1 is the world’s best event, but I come from great islands. I belong here, so do we (The Marianas). Its going to be a hard road ahead. This is kickboxing at its best.but it’s the HagaChamoru that gives me the Spirit in Fighting. We are a great fighting people. Our heart is strong.YamatoDamashii. Live as a
“GodBless You. Thanks for Your support. United We stand. I will keep on fighting.” .
Before his fight, the production at K-1 put on the events big screens, a chant by Jay Pascual, video footage fromteh guys at Fury, and a compilation finalized by the guys at www.67one.com. A large part of it says”Reveal the Spirit of Your Ancestors”. And reveal our spirit he did. Fall down seven time. Get up eight.
A beast in training. A Chamoru in Life. And today, a winner in defeat. PatrickAyuyu is a K-1Fighter. http://www.k-1.co.jp/k-1gp/top829.htm www.hodyjaehuh.comhttp://www.hodyjaehuh.com/news/news.php?action=fullnews&id=156
