Hafa Adai, So I guess most of us have seen Pat Ayuyu’s fight on youtube. . So he lost by KO but his performance was definitely not a disappointment. A fractured rib that he suffered since the end of the first round might keep him out of competition until the latter part of the year but rest assured, we will hear more of him in the near future.

Justin”TheShocker”Cruz is getting ready for a title fight in the URCCat the end of the month in the Philippines and KelvinFitial will be flying the Marianas Flag for the second time at the ArtOfWar in China.   An applause for Saipan’s Frank “The Crank”Camacho for securing gold in the 185lb.white belt division anda  bronze in the men’s no-gi intermediate at the the NAGA Virgina Grappling Championships. And another congratulations to Zac Rapadas for taking gold in the men’s blue belt division athe CopaPacifica Jiujitsu Championships inCalifornia. This comes just weeks after Jason Evangelista’s Gold in the Pan Ams and almost a year after an outstanding BJJ WorldTitle forGuam with James Quan’sGold Medal as a PurpleBelt at the WorldChampionships last year in

California.

A dynamic six week road in grappling and Jiujitsu are in front of us as TheCarlsonGracieJiujitsuAcademy will be heading out to the Philippines hoping for another outstanding performance at the PanAsian BJJ andGrappling Tournament on May3rd.

pankrationaugust010.jpg

Multiple Kickboxing, Jiujitsu, and Pankration medalist at only 14, Ian Lujan and a host of other Guamanians training at Mark Laymond’s Cobra Kai will be competing on the same weekend’s Grappler’s Quest in Las Vegas. On May10thThe CNMIwill be holding their second grappling tournament in the Mariana Islands’ largest Martial Arts training center in the 15000 square-foot training and event facility in the newTrenchTech/PurebredSaipan.   The guys at Kontenda’s will be busy with Caesar Whitt hosting a Judo and Jiujitsu tournament, while Sonny Chargualaf hosts an  amateur kickboxing event as Simon Ysrael facilitates, on the same day, a tournament for TaeKwonDo, all at the Westin Resort on May 17th With the BJJ World Championships around the corner , it seems that our Guam Grapplers here and abroad will have some opportunities to sharpen their blades before the event with these smaller, although always significant tournaments.

This time around though at the Worlds, Guam will be making a bigger presence with more than double the amount of Guam representative competitors from lst year stepping up to the challenge in the world arena, at the Mike and Arlene Walter Pyramid in LongBeachCalifornia.

img_0571.JPG492578712_42defa7b95_o1.jpg

Mike Fowler will be leading TeamPurebred/LloydIrvinJiujitsuAcademy with GuamBJJAmbassador and assistant instructor Stephen Roberto taking his first step into the highest level of BJJ Competition in the blackbelt division. Guam’s first BJJ World Champion James Quan , will hopefully join TheShoyorollOnlineForum’s Vince Quitugua and Chris Gutierrez for their first time in the World’s brown belt divisions.    img_1151.JPG

Familiar MMA names among the long and growing list of Guam Grapplers  heading to the Worlds will also be Ted Vida, T-RexAflague, ZachRapadas, possibly Frank”TheCrank”Camacho, as well as the recent PanAmerican gold medalist Jason Evangelista and PXC Vice President Eli Monge. As it looks,The Worlds Championships will not only be an opportunity for our competitors in competition, but also for our Guamanians and Chamorros in congregation. Strength inNumbers.

ian-and-isaac-lujan.jpg

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need additional information.

1. What motivated you into combat sports and Martial Arts?

My Mom’s brothers and cousins are big MMA fans so someone is always having a UFC or Pride Fight Party. We started to really get into MMA by just watching the fights and hanging out with our uncles. My Mom’s brother is Thomas Calvo (PXC / Preba Hao Fighter) and has also encouraged us to take up MMA.

2. What are some of the benefits you’ve gained from Martial Arts training?

Our training has helped us to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. We’ve gained more confidence by knowing that we can defend ourselves if necessary, however, we have the mental discipline not to hurt others or cause trouble. Our Training Program has also helped us improve the skills we need to compete at a national level.

3. What do you understand about the Guam MMA and BJJ scene?

We’ve heard news that there has been negativity as a result of recent incidents on Guam involving our youth. We hope that we can influence others by letting people know how this sport has helped us in a positive way.

4. As children active in this sport, what do you think can be done to cultivate a healthy environment?

Frequent tournaments sponsored by local businesses may help promote a healthy environment. Perhaps some of the local fighters should reach out to the communities and discourage violence. Free classes and seminars for our youth.

5. What is the most difficult thing about training?

Balancing school, training and friends.

6. Please give us a schedule in your training?

Mondays / Wednesday – Muay Thai / Jiu Jitsu, TUE / THU – Jiu Jitsu

7. What are your ambitions in Martial Arts?

We both want to be UFC or Pro MMA Fighters. I (Ian) want to earn a black belt in both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. We also want to someday share our knowledge with our local talent who want to pursue a career in MMA.

8. Do you have anything you want to say to the People of Guam?

We’ve lived out in the Mainland for a long time but we are proud Chamorro’s and will always represent Guam no matter where we are in the world. We hope that our story will help encourage our youth to look at MMA in a positive light.

After you have trained jiu jitsu, everything in life is easy.

pdn4.jpgcimg2097.JPG

Humbled, blessed and stoked are the best words to describe recieving the black belt.

I am humbled by my instructors Enson Inoue and Mike Fowler for having faith in me. Not just teachers but friends, they are the yin and yang of my jiu jitsu.

I feel blessed with the people and experiences along the way. My wife Dara has been with me thru the ups and downs and has always kept me focused. My boys Cole and Kyle who make me feel like a superhero. My mom for accepting and respecting my love for jiu jitsu as a different form of higher education. Melchor Manibusan for showing me wrestling, attitude and heart to become a complete grappler. SPIKE 22, GROUND FU, TRENCH TECH, Jess Taitano, Tetsuji Kato, Cucci Alvarez for the familia support. FOKAI for all the love, the familia is my heart. The students at Team Purebred/Lloyd Irvin BJJ for fueling this wicked life vehicle called BJJ, you are my soul.

Stoked that my journey has only just begun.

Thank You and Si Yuus Maase. God bless us all
