Hafa Adai, Some updates for you…
Justin Cruz’s title fight for the URCC was moved to June 14th. It looks like we may have our first local female fighter athlete competing in MixedMartialArts overseas in the Godz of War on June 21st.
Its going to be an impressive PrebaHao fight card on May 16th and a Jiujitsu,Judo, and Kickboxing tournament at the Westin Hotel the following day making it another combat sports weekend .
Purebred and other Guam nationals are getting ready for the BJJ World Championships the first weekend of June while another youth JiuJitsu and Grappling tournament, two major MMA events for Guam and another one in

With several multiple gold medal performances by Miguel Ayuyu, Mike Carbullido, and Steven Kim, the junior grapplers also turned things up a notch in entering entering the adult divisions to outperform the majority of their senior competitors in several outstanding performances for
In an event once dominated by the collective efforts of a contingency from several of Guam’s local BJJ training centers, the Pan Asias was missing one of the event’s prior dominating academies,Team Purebred/Lloyd Irvin because of their preparation and time dedicated for June’s World Championships in California.
But as our sport is evolving and as the training and competing populating grows, Marianas BJJ is in effect, covering more area, gaining momentum and paving more roads for greater opportunities in the region’s combat sports industry for not only the grappling arts, but also for MMA and other athletics.
Speaking of regional opportunities Saipans second Submission grappling tourney will be this weekend at the new TrenchTech/PurebredSaipan Academy. Saipan’s recent success in regional MixedMartialArts Competition is echoing landmark accomplishments with other milestone achievements like PatAyuyu’s recent rise as a K-1 fighter, Kelvin Fitial’s recent ventures into major MMA events in Asia, and Frank Camacho’s capture of the CNMI’s first foreign MMA Championship title.
Larger scale grappling and amateur events developing throughout the region can only fluorish the environment if there are competitiors, fans, and sponsors to support them. So far We have been doing a great job of working collectively with our neighbors in the

K-1:WorldMax
Over10 Years ago, Patrick Ayuyu was fighting as a semi-professional kickboxer in Japan and formerly announced as “TheToganiTyson” . Togani for the gym that he trained in, and Tyson for his physical likeness to the controversial, and many would agree, legendary, former professional boxer.
After more than a decade after a 3year career of 18 accumulated fights in amateur and professional kickboxing and only two losses by decision , after a unanimous decision loss ina world title fight in frnt of 23,00fans at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Ayuyu returned to the Marianas where he went undefeated in two kick boxing matches in Jungle Rules 1 and 2 ,and another two in Fury and Fighting Islands Rota, and a mixed amrtial arts bout in Fury6. Ayuyu then left to train with Enson Inoue in
Ayuyu fought his biggest career fight to date in his first bout against Dago Drago athe K-1WorldMax 16ManTournament. FirstRound: Pat comes out aggressively and pushes Drago back for most of the round staying inside. Lands more punches than Drago and looks like he’s leading like hes controlling the fr the first two minutes. The round heats up with Ayuyu and Drago exchanging more strikes in the pocket where Drago eventually lands a lerge left hok sending Pat reeling towards the corner but in god recovery under Dragos blows until the bell rings ending the round.
Round 2 heats up with Drago coming out more aggressively and Ayuyu just as happy to stay and exchange in the pocket with Drago unleashing his arsenal with foot thrusts and head kicks, eventually dropping Pat to the mat with ahead kick. Drago also lands a solid spinning back kick t the head. But Pat answers back with flurry f punches that Drago blcked with the rund ending in Drag’s favor. Round3.Excitement. Pats looking a bit mre winded but doesn’t stopt he attacking with Drago landing an axe kick t the head of Pat and then a body kick sending Pat to the canvas. Pat Rises fr anther vilent exchange with Drago landing anther headkick and then back ta notherleft bodykick sending Pat to the canvas before Pat returns with a big right hol where Drago evades, returning with a left hook that sends Ayuyu to the mat for the third and final time. Patrick Ayuyu suffers his first Knockout loss with only 4secnds left in the final round. A full house at the Green Arena in Hirshima cheered as Drago advanced and KO highlight reels played on the big screens while Pat walked got up and walked off on his own as camers and media waiting for interviews and photos of Gori-chan while fans got their pens, papers, and cameras ready for autographs of and photos with the new K-1 fighter that, despite his loss, had the entire arena cheering for another exciting fight at the World’s Most Prestigious Kickboxing event. Pat, talk to us about the fight:
“First, I would never have been here if nt for the fguidance and friendship of Enson Inoue, Sangtiennoi, and all the boys back home in the islands.’Thank You for everything. I will make you proud.I thought it was going to be a brawl but for the most part it was much more strategic than I anticipated. I am not going to make any excuses, I gave my best and Drago beat me. He was tough. He was fast. He was strong. But instead of defending, I just kept fighting forward. It was a good time of spirit. Despite all my hard training, he saw holes in my game and was able to capitalize on them. Fortunately so have I and Im going to train even harder and come back even better. The progress never stops for me. Neither does it for them. I know that.
“Its an honor for me to compete at this level, these are the world’s best fighters, K-1 is the world’s best event, but I come from great islands. I belong here, so do we (The Marianas). Its going to be a hard road ahead. This is kickboxing at its best.but it’s the HagaChamoru that gives me the Spirit in Fighting. We are a great fighting people. Our heart is strong.YamatoDamashii. “GodBless You. Thanks for Your support. United We stand. I will keep on fighting.” .
Before his fight, the production at K-1 put on the events big screens, a chant by Jay Pascual, video footage fromteh guys at Fury, and a compilation finalized by the guys at www.67one.com. A large part of it says”Reveal the Spirit of Your Ancestors”. And reveal our spirit he did. Fall down seven time. Get up eight.
A beast in training. A Chamoru in Life. And today, a winner in defeat. PatrickAyuyu is a K-1Fighter. http://www.k-1.co.jp/k-1gp/top829.htm www.hodyjaehuh.comhttp://www.hodyjaehuh.com/news/news.php?action=fullnews&id=156

Ayuyu gets ready for biggest fight of his career
Editor’s note: This column is about mixed martial arts, and it will appear on a biweekly basis on Thursdays.Hafa adai.
For your information: Maria Dunn just spent a week on Guam catching up with friends and family to power up before a very rigorous training schedule before competing in the world’s largest sporting event; Jason Evangelista delivers another gold medal to Guam with his first-place finish in the masters featherweight purple belt division in last month’s Pan American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships in California with Caesar Whitt bringing back a silver in the masters medium heavy; PXC Live is on for April 11; jiu jitsu practitioners are getting ready for the Pan Asian Jiu Jitsu Championships in the Philippines in May and the BJJ World Championships in June; Fokai Industries and Onra just finished sponsoring a very successful Fearless Fighting Championships in the Philippines on April 5; and Justin “The Shocker” Cruz just received an invitation to compete for the URCC bantamweight title on May 31 in the Philippines. I’m here in Hiroshima with Melchor Manibusan and son Maximus, Godwyn Quitugua and Albert “Super Brut” Borja from Guam along with Enson Inoue and crew to support Patrick Ayuyu in last night’s K-1 World Max 16-Man World Tournament. Fight preparationYesterday we watched Pat run laps around the hallways of the Rigah Royal Hotel. We spoke to his trainer, Sangtiennoi, about Ayuyu’s last six weeks of training at Purebred Thailand in preparation of the biggest fight of his career against Dago Drago in his first, and hopefully not last, match in pursuit of the championship belt.We watched Pat do interviews in front of numbers of cameras for media around the world, and watched his image and fight highlights in edit under the world’s best combat sports production crew. Realizing a DreamAt the rules meeting, we saw Pat have to strip naked to qualify at 155 pounds a day before his fight against one of the world’s best, Dago Drago, as the first fight to kick off the start of this very prestigious world tournament — an outstanding weight loss from 225 pounds just three years ago when he virtually abandoned his goals of becoming a K-1 world champion. We’ve spoken with Pat about this dream of his years ago when we were negotiating his first fight in the Marianas in Jungle Rules 1, and today, only a few hours away, he’s only four wins away from what used to be a virtually unrealistic goal. As we can see, times are changing and the islands are comfortably adjusting itself to modern strategies in training and nutrition. But it’s the same the world over. It’s a pretty heavy scene here. Loads of fighter-athlete celebrities from around the world have been assembled in Hiroshima as fighters, cornermen, and fans too, gather around in support and celebration of the fighting spirit in a place that suffered one of the world’s worse end results of conflict. We’ve come really far in such a short period of time in Marianas combatives. It’s always healthy to reflect from time to time on what we’re trying to support, promote and cultivate in combatives and every other thing in life. As the sport grows, so does our voice, and in effect we should understand that so should our collective purpose. What kind of seeds are we planting and what kind of fruits are we hoping to harvest? A growing industryThis industry is growing as fast as our fighter-athletes are improving, and we’ve come into a healthy situation in things that the spark that’s been set in local combatives evolution is receiving oxygen from thousands of miles overseas and from some of the biggest hats in world martial arts entertainment.By the time this article is published, Pat would have competed and we will already be putting together a report on how Patrick Ayuyu did in yesterday’s K-1 World Tournament. After looking at the event’s highlight reel and the event only a few hours away, we realize more than ever that Dago Drago will not be an easy opponent, but have confidence that neither will Pat. This is a very competitive sport. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the win, but at least for now we can celebrate the victory that our islands have once again secured a bigger place in the highest levels in world combatives. Good luck, Pat, we are here to support. Hoping for some good news in Saturday’s paper. Again, thanks for dropping by. Roman Dela Cruz is a mixed martial arts super-fan, and a representative for Fury MMA. |
