Warming up f0r the InterPacificSpearfishing Championships in Kona Hawaii

Team Guam is headed to Kona, Hawaii this Saturday, 4/19, to participate in our first ever International Pacific Underwater Fishing Championship…also referred to as Interpacific Championship.  This is a milestone for Guam and the event itself as it is Hawaii’s first time to host. Hawaii invited Guam and Japan to partipate, other teams will include Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand who are core members.  New Caledonia has been absent for the past couple of years.

 There is an Island-wide fisheries meeting taking place at the Guam Fishermen’s Co-Op this Saturday evening…This is a time when all fishermen/women band together.  Regardless of your fishing methods, preferences or dislikes, the focus is on fishermen as a whole and the rules, access and inadequacies that affect us all.

above: Fred Mendiola, 2nd place Men’s Surfing.  Joieto, the 1st place winner,  was still in the water when the awards were presented.  Typical..  In the background (no shirt) is Kenny Pier, Guam surfing legend, who at 55 yrs. of age placed 3rd in the men’s surfing to show us all that age is just a number.
